Did you know that St Valentine is the patron saint of Beekeepers?

Valentine was a Christian evangelist who defied the orders of Emperor Claudius II and married couples in secret to spare the husbands from war. Incarcerated by Emperor Claudius II, it's said that Valentine cured his jailer’s daughter of blindness and on hearing of his impending execution in 269AD, sent the daughter a note signed “From Your Valentine” a gesture spawning tradition that has lasted across the centuries. What a legend!

St Valentine’s patronage of beekeeping is no surprise. Honey has long been associated with romance and love. In medieval times, beekeepers would provide mead for wedding celebrations, supplying the bride and groom with enough to keep them going for the next month in the hope that this sweet and potent tipple would ensure a speedy pregnancy. This is where the word “honeymoon” originates.

St Valentine is charged with ensuring the sweetness of honey and the protection of beekeepers – here at Eshe Honey we’re hoping for both!

So to all of our friends, family and Eshe Honey lovers – Happy Valentine’s Day!
